Vision Boards as a tool for Practical Magic

Every New Year Vision Boards become all the hype and I’d like to share my practice of making them with you. I’ve been doing one for many years now and here is my how, why, what and steps on how to make your own if you’d like to try one.

A quick disclaimer - I do not see January 1st as a time to start anything new. It is an odd placement for a new year in my opinion ~ the dead of winter. However I do see it as the perfect time to choose seeds of intention to plant into the soil of winter’s darkness. And that’s exactly the magic we create with vision boards…

What Are Vision Boards?

Of course this answer will vary depending on who you ask, and my definition of a vision board is : a symbolic representation of the vision you have for yourself, what you are calling in and how you want to feel.

It only needs to make sense to you and should be aesthetically pleasing to your eye. You should feel power, excitement, inspiration and a sense of clarity when you observe your work.

It doesn’t need to be a complex maze of stories like mine have become over the years. It can be very simple as long as it brings out those manifesting/creation with clarity energy feelings within you.

Ask yourself what do you want to FEEL, DO, BE?

Begin by choosing 3-5 Emotional States you want to primarily exist in. This will help you answer the question above.

Of course life will do its thing and we are not the sole creators of our timeline, therefore unexpected and unprecedented emotional states can/do/will appear.

What we are though, are the CO-Creators of our own lives and we can make choices that lead us on our paths.

When I think about the emotional state or state of mind I want to primarily exist in, I am choosing which states allow me to feel most open to receiving divine insights that tell me what move to make next to serve my higher calling.

I want to be in alignment with this guidance to have the space and capacity to see the signs and feel the pulls.

For me, I need peace, serenity, confidence, alignment, etc., in order to be open or sensitive to hear my calling.

I ask into my higher self ~ God, please help me want and see what you want for me.

How to get your vision onto the board?

Once you establish the feelings you want to feel in order to achieve your personal goals, see what comes up when you settle into one of those emotional states.

Take “successful” for example.

If I close my eyes and FEEL into what it means to be successful to me, what immediately come up is:

  • time freedom, being on my own clock

  • slow mornings with my children

  • home cooked meals

  • forest adventures together

  • creating art, dancing, community

  • receptivity to divine guidance

Now do this same process with each emotional state that you chose in the beginning. Pick your emotional state, allow yourself to feel into that space and jot down whatever ideas come up in relation to that emotion. There is no right or wrong here.

Write the ideas in lines or webs, however your brain likes to organize things.

Once you have your lists of words and ideas that relate to your emotional states, now it’s time to search for images that are in alignment with those ideas.

Go through anything with images such as magazines, old calendars, agendas, you can print images on-line, use fun stickers and also create your own artwork. Be as creative as you want to!

After you choose your images, intuitively start setting them down and adjusting accordingly. Again, this only needs to make sense to you.

If it feels right to start off in the center and work your way around in concentric circles, or a spiral or from upper left to lower right corner, do it. ~ Whatever feels good to you.

What is the purpose?

Your Vision Board is an anchor to stay focused and recenter anytime you sense yourself floundering or out of alignment.

Your vision board is a visual and symbolic guide made by YOU to ensure you remain on your unique path in this life.

It is a reminder that while you may not be the sole force shaping your life, you are indeed a co-creator and your board is proof of your ability to create something from an idea.

Vision Boards have been a ritual now for about a decade and I have found them to be a powerful tool and use of practical magic.

Not only do they represent your visions you plan to manifest, they are a physical embodiment of your faith and inner knowing that you are a co-creator in this world.

We are not passive objects, we are here on purpose, with a purpose.
